Empowerment for youths

Youth, with their dreams and aspirations, are our future. With their passion and zeal, youths are driven by their ideals to shape lives and make a difference to the community. YMCA of Singapore aims to develop and empower youths to realise their full potential and emerge as responsible community champions who can positively impact society.

Our programmes -
YMCA Youth For Causes

YMCA Youth For Causes (YFC) is a community initiative by the YMCA of Singapore in 2003. Funded by YMCA of Singapore, the programme is a catalyst to promote social entrepreneurship and community leadership development among Singapore youths. It provides youths aged 15 to 25 with a platform which includes seed funding, training and volunteer mentorship for executing self-initiated projects to raise public awareness, funds and mobilise volunteers for Social Service Agencies (SSAs) of their choice.

YFC complements the “Values in Action” (VIA) programme as part of Ministry of Education’s Character and Citizenship Education. The youth, comprised in teams of four, will demonstrate values such as harmony, respect and responsibility as they champion their social causes.

University-YMCA (Uni-Y)
Uni-Y: A Community serving Communities

University-YMCA (Uni-Y) Singapore is the university service club of YMCA of Singapore. Currently, Uni-Y Singapore has student chapters in Nanyang Technological University (NTU), National University of Singapore (NUS), Singapore Management University (SMU), and Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD).

At Uni-Y, we go beyond being a volunteering platform, but becoming a community that emphasises on developing and empowering youths to be servant leaders who would impact the local and international communities.

Uni-Y: A Community within and between campuses

At Uni-Y, we believe it is the community that drives service. We think it’s important to build on the community we have within and between campuses even before we go on out to serve the local and international communities around us.

How do we do that? Beyond regular information sessions and booths during CCA fairs, keep an eye out for our #shareyoursmile drives.

#Shareyoursmile is an encouragement movement purposed to brighten up someone’s day – whether it’s the unsung heros in and outside of campus, or fellow peer stressed over school – through a note of encouragement. We hope that through this small act of kindness, many others will also learn to take a small step to share joy, lift spirits and create a positive impact.

Uni-Y Singapore: Local and International Service Programmes

With an established presence across campuses, volunteers can look forward to cross-university volunteering. We offer a variety of community service programmes that reach out to different client groups.

They say you never know a man until you stand in his shoes and walk about in them – want to experience what life is like beyond our shores? Join us on YMCA’s International Service Programmes.

Uni-Y: Nurturing Community Champions

With our affiliation with YMCA of Singapore, Uni-Y Singapore has access to many volunteer development resources. Beyond workshops and volunteer training sessions, Uni-Y Singapore also offers local and international internships.

In addition, Uni-Y Members get opportunities to travel and take part in youth conferences abroad – take for example Global Youth Conference in Osaka, or SHINE Conference in Tainan.

YMCA Speaking Awards

Through various youth development programmes, YMCA exposes youths to local and international community service, social entrepreneurship, character, confidence building programmes and more. The YMCA Speaking Awards is a part of this effort, and designed to help to develop thinking and speaking skills among our youths.

The annual YMCA Plain English Speaking Awards (PESA) and Mandarin Speaking Awards (MSA) are national level speaking competitions aimed at students to develop their abilities and think and communicate effectively. Experiential learning trips are incorporated into the competition to enrich and inspire the participants.
