YMCA International Service Programmes

The YMCA International Service Programmes (ISP) by YMCA of Singapore empower youths, volunteers and organisations through structured overseas service-learning expeditions and leadership development initiatives across ASEAN and China.

Through these programmes, YMCA of Singapore works closely with regional YMCA partners to support less privileged community across the region. Participants from initatives such as Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) teams, volunteers under the Youth Corps Expedition Project (YEP), the YEP Leadership Training Course (LTC), Uni-Y ISP open trips, and the YMCA Rebuilding Community Programme take part in meaningful community development efforts.

These projects span areas such as healthcare, education, infrastructure improvement, sustainability, environmental conservation, and capacity building, with the aim of empowering communities towards greater resilience and self-sufficiency.

Our Work Across ASEAN and China
For over two decades, YMCA of Singapore has been building meaningful partnerships with communities across ASEAN and China through impactful service-learning expeditions for volunteers and groups of all ages. We also support youths participating in the Youth Corps Expedition Project (YEP) as a funding partner, working with student teams to design and implement community development initiatives that address real needs while fostering cross-cultural learning.

In partnership with National Youth Council, YMCA conducts the Youth Corps Expedition Project Leadership Training Course (LTC). Through this programme, we provide training and mentorship to student leaders, equipping them with essential project management and leadership skills to plan and carry out effective and sustainable service projects.

In addition to youth expeditions, we organise customised programmes for corporate groups, recruit and manage volunteers for various community development initiatives, and collaborate closely with regional partners to maximise community impact.

At YMCA, we provide resources, guidance and connections needed to empower individuals and groups to make a meaningful difference through service-learning.
YMCA - YEP Leaders' Training Course (LTC)
In partnership with Youth Corps Singapore, the YMCA of Singapore is an appointed Youth Corps Expedition Programme (YEP) funding and programme partner, in collaboration with Youth Corps Singapore (YCS) under the National Youth Council. The YMCA of Singapore aims to trains, challenge and empower youth to rise up and be counted as effective contributors to an inclusive society, both locally and overseas.

The YMCA-YEP LTC is a 4-day specialised course designed to prepare and equip YEP Leaders with the necessary skills and knowledge to design, lead and implement the Youth Expedition Projects.

Beyond project execution, the YMCA- YEP LTC seeks to develop values-driven youth leaders who are able to engage respectfully with overseas communities, foster meaningful partnerships, and implement ground-up iniatives that address immediate needs while empowering local partners towards long-term resilience and self-sufficiency

Siem Reap & Phnom Penh

Volunteers from YMCA had partnered with local non-profit organisation to empower communities through structured and sustainable English literacy programmes. Beyond education, these initiatives also addressed critical community infrastrucure needs.

Together with our local partners, we helped to create a more conducive environment for the community by building schools, home, toilets and libraries, and also the digging of wells to ensure children and their families can learn, grow and thrive for the long term.

Kampong Chhnang

YMCA is piloting a new Youth Development programme in Kampong Chhnang to improve the quality of life by providing greater access to basic vision care while empowering youth through skills development and community engagement.

This initiative is brought together with the support of researchers, doctors, local NGOs, associations, and unions to develop sustainable initiatives that support low-income Cambodians and improve their quality of life.

In LaosYMCA partners with multiple organisations to provide volunteers with opportunities to deliver structured English enrichment lessons on a regular basis, equipping young learners with practical language skills that will benefit their future employment prospects.

Luang Prabang

The teams work closely with local schools at Luang Prabang to serve students from nearby villages, supporting not only classroom-based curriculum through teaching and mentorship, but also contributing to infrastructure improvements that create safer and more conducive environments for learning. These construction projects include rebuilding toilets, gardens, fences, and various other facilities that would help the school to provide quality education for their students. The teams also engage in many cross-cultural activities and interactions to facilitate global exposure and curate new experiences for the local students.

Oudomxay – Remote Mountain School Service

YMCA partners with a rural education community at the Oudomxay province in northern Laos to strengthen the students’ English proficiency by building communication skills, confidence, and practical life skills through activities. Many of the students come from distant mountain villages and stay on-site during the school term. In addition to educational activities, we support infrastructure improvements to enhance the learning environment and engage the students through meaningful interaction and programmes.

We partner with local communities and YMCA’s network in the Philippines to support meaningful and sustainable initiatives that improve lives while developing globally aware youth leaders.

Pangasinan – Improving Learning Environments
In Pangasinan, located north of Manila, we partner with a local village school to enhance the learning environment for students. Projects carried out by youth teams include the construction of sanitation facilities such as toilets and the extension of classroom spaces. These initiatives are designed to improve their living conditions and common spaces, thus providing them with a more conducive spaces for learning.

San Pablo – Building a Youth Hub
Located at the South of Manila, YMCA of San Pablo is envisioned as a community outreach centre designed to engage and support at-risk youths through programmes that provide mentorship, leadership development, and positive alternatives for growth. We work with YMCA of San Pablo to support the development of the youth hub.

Makati – Urban Poor Medical Missions
In the heart of Manila, we collaborate with YMCA Makati and medical students to organise mobile medical missions serving urban poor communities. Through these missions, we helped the underserved communities to gain access to essential healthcare services by providing basic health screenings, medical consultations and health education.

Iloilo – Community Health Outreach
At Iloilo, our teams conduct medical missions across different barangays (villages). Working alongside local partners, youth leaders facilitate health talks on proper nutrition, organise feeding programmes, and conduct basic health checks to promote healthier lifestyles within the communities.

Together, these initiatives aim to create meaningful impact within partner communities while cultivating empathy, leadership, and a deeper sense of global responsibility among participating youths.

In Chiang Mai, our teams partner with YMCA of Chiang Mai to serve neighbouring schools in the province. Volunteers work closely with these schools to conduct various programmes and activities for local students, including carnivals, workshops, and games. Youth leaders and volunteers are involved in planning and implementing these activities with the aim of enriching and broadening students’ learning experiences.

We also support infrastructure improvements at participating schools to create safer and more conducive learning environments. These works often include enhancements to sports facilities, classroom spaces, and sanitation facilities.

This long-standing partnership between YMCA of Singapore and YMCA Chiang Mai has helped to ensure the continuity and effectiveness of community projects in the region.

Following the devastating 2008 Sichuan earthquake, YMCA of Singapore partnered with YMCA Shanghai to support the affected community in Dujiangyan. Our work in the region began as part of the broader recovery and community support efforts after the earthquake.

Since then, YMCA of Singapore has continued its long-term partnership with local organisations in Dujiangyan to support community engagement and development programmes. Volunteer teams work with local partners to serve residents in the surrounding areas, with a particular focus on vulnerable groups.

Our programmes include youth-focused activities such as summer camps for students, as well as volunteer engagement with persons with physical disabilities. These initiatives promote social inclusion, cross-cultural learning, and meaningful community interaction in Dujiangyan.

With the support of local education bureaus and YMCA Vietnam, YMCA of Singapore works with village schools in Ben Tre, Dalat, and Tuy Hoa Provinces to support improvements to physical infrastructure. These efforts aim to create safer and more conducive learning environments that support student development and strengthen schools’ readiness to meet Vietnam’s National Standard of Education.

Achieving this standard allows schools to gain greater recognition and access to central government funding and resources, which are important for improving the overall quality of education and sustaining better learning environments for students and local communities.

In April 2015, the devastating 2015 Nepal earthquake claimed more than 9,000 lives and injured over 23,000 people, leaving thousands homeless as entire villages were destroyed. In response, YMCA of Singapore, together with local partners in Nepal, began supporting affected communities in Bhagawati and Khanalthok villages in Bhakunde, Kavre District.

Through the YMCA Rebuilding Community Programme, volunteers initially supported families displaced by the disaster by helping to construct temporary shelters and restore damaged school facilities. Over time, this effort has grown into a long-term partnership focused on improving community infrastructure and supporting educational development in the area.

Today, volunteers continue to work alongside local partners and residents in Bhakunde Besi on projects such as school improvement works, community facilities, and student engagement activities. These initiatives aim to strengthen the learning environment for children while contributing to the long-term resilience and development of the community.
